What is WordPress SEO by Yoast
Are you using WordPress and have you got an SEO package installed? For the longest time I was ignoring the SEO packages and now I wish I truly had not been. I’m sure many of you know of the plugins you can get for WordPress, some work well and others don’t. I have now been using WordPress SEO by Yoast for a few days and I am very impressed.
WordPress SEO by Yoast is straight forward and easy to use, at the bottom of every post you are given the and SEO menu; a partial screenshot is shown below:
On the screenshot shown is where you will choose your focus Keyword or phrase and you will work from there to tweak your article. You want your focus keyword to show up in your article heading, page title, page URL and Meta description once; in your content you want the keywords to show up more than once. How many times the keywords show up in your content is relevant to the length of your article, they say around 5% is a good ratio.
What is your Keyword Ratio: An easy way to figure out your keyword ratio is to have word count the number of words in your article, let us say it is 500 for example purposes; so if my keyword or keyword phrase shows up 5 times, I have a 1% Keyword ratio. (1 word out of 100 = 1%). If I want to go for 4% I will need the keyword in my article 20 times. I will need 4 instances of the keywords for every 100 words, 4 x 5(500×4% =20).
The Bonus with WordPress SEO by Yoast is that Yoast will give you your keyword ratio under the Page Analysis tab.
With WordPress SEO by Yoast the length of your Title and Meta description have a suggested length, pay attention to where it says characters left at the bottom of these windows and try to stay within those numbers.
I have noticed with WordPress SEO by Yoast that your SEO screen does not show the numbers changing until after you have at least saved a draft of your article; so save the article as a draft first and then start working on your SEO. Another point to mention, in case you are completely new to SEO tweaking, is that to work on your URL you need to edit that in the usual place where you edit your URL permalinks, under your page title in WordPress.
There are three page tabs with this SEO plugin, there is General, Page Analysis and Advanced; I have not ventured into advanced yet but; I would recommend going in to see your Page Analysis for recommendations after you have completed your entries on the General tab. I’m just starting out with this SEO package and I have take the time to get all of my past posts tweaked, it’ll pay off in the long run.
