Your profile is key
On freelancing websites your profile is key; it’s the first thing people look at when considering your bid. A bad profile means you will almost certainly get no work – and no work means no income, no income means you don’t really have a business. The key to getting work on a freelancing site is to sell yourself – sell yourself to those looking for your skills. If you can design breath taking and eye catching websites then don’t just make your clients take your word for it, upload links to sites in your portfolio!

Remember, profiles written in broken English littered with spelling errors and grammatical mistakes are an instant turn off to potential clients. If English isn’t your first language, it could be worth paying someone a small amount of money to proof read and edit your profile for you – so it’s as good as it can be. A profile is the first thing a client will look at, if it’s not very impressive – it’s the last thing your potential client will look at before seeking out another provider.

Be realistic
You have to be realistic in your work – don’t make promises you can’t keep. If you promise to complete work to a standard you simply can’t achieve then there’s only one thing that will come of it – that’s unhappy clients. Unhappy clients leave bad feedback, and getting them to pay can also be a nightmare. It’s very important you keep your clients happy – don’t claim you can do things you know you can’t, and don’t make promises if you can’t keep them.

Almost as important as your profile, is the message you send to your potential client when asking them to consider you for the job. Again, broken English or a generic message will make that client move onto the next person in contention without the blink of an eye. Being unique and sounding genuine is crucial to getting jobs. Don’t just copy and paste the same reply to every job you find – write something different every time!

When you’ve mastered the basics of conducting yourself in a professional manner, you will find it’s easy to get work. When you’ve built a track record which is bolstered with great feedback the jobs will come rolling in. Work means income – and the more work you get the more likely your business is to survive. Tick all the right boxes and keep all of your clients happy- and you won’t be looking for any more startup business ideas because you’ll be onto a winner with freelancing!
